October 2018 Ipsy Bag + Birch Box
It’s been a few months since I’ve done a post on my ipsy Glam Bag or Birch Box! Now I am moved back home in the Bay Area and settled, so I can start posting these monthly again. I’ve decided to combine the ipsy Glam Bag and Birch Box into one post for this month so my posts aren’t all beauty – I’m so not a beauty blogger! haha
1. it hair care – 12-in-one leave in treatment
After lightning my hair a few times, it’s not the silky shiny locks it used to be. I have to use leave in conditioner and hair oil daily to make it manageable and reduce frizz. I use this product on the ends of my hair in addition to my regular leave-in conditioner spray and hair oil. This treatment smells amazing and does make my hair soft, but it does not reduce frizz. I love it anyway!
2. 111skin – Space Defense Bright Eye Lift Gel
I LOVE all skincare products and most of the ones I currently use came from ipsy bags. This eye serum feels so luxurious and I only need a tiny amount because it spreads so easily. I haven’t noticed or looked for a difference in under-eye appearance, but this is a product I’ve already incorporated in my nightly skincare routine.
*not Cruelty-free Because they sell to China where animal testing is mandatory
3. IBY – Eyeshadow in Dance Party
I’m not an eyeshadow person. At one point in my life, I would do the full face makeup with foundation, concealer, eyeshadow, etc. and I do own 3 Naked Eye Palettes, but I’m definitely not like that anymore. It’s a special occassion if I’m wearing eyeshadow! But every year, ipsy sends dark, moody makeup in the October Glam Bag and I love it. I’ve already used this eyeshadow multiple times for Halloween looks. It goes on pigmented, blends out well, and is a nice black without much shimmer – what more could you ask for?
4. tarte – Double Duty Beauty™ Shape Tape Contour Concealer
Tarte is without a doubt one of my favorite brands. They’re great quality and Tarte themselves are cruelty-free, but unfortunately owned by a company, KOSE Corporation, that is NOT cruelty-free. My favorite bronzer is from Tarte – the Amazonian Clay one (I got it in my ipsy!). I’ve been needing a new concealer (for those special occasions that I wear it) and was so happy to get this one! It conceals well, doesn’t flake, and stays on all day.

5. Sugar Cosmetics – It’s A Pout Time! Vivid Lipstick in Better Call Salmon
First of all, 10/10 for name. Anything with a Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul reference can take my money. I am not a lipstick person. I can never get it to stay on, I’m awful at getting it to stay in my lip outline (someone teach me the magic of lipliners), and I just don’t like how most look on me. It always feels like people are staring at my lips when I wear it out and it makes me uncomfortable haha, maybe I should get over that. Anyway, this lipstick goes on so smooth, but it’s a bit to berry pink for me. If I’m going to wear lipstick, I prefer darker, more muted tones.
*cruelty-free (unknown if they sell to china)
Overall? Loved this bag! October tends to be one of my favorite bags because it is always spooky, dark, and moody. The bag is really cute and is for sale on my Depop if you want just the bag!
Unlike ipsy, which I’ve had for a few years now, this was only my 5th Birch Box. After the first few, I was ready to cancel it. I was getting items, like dry shampoo, that I specifically said I did NOT want. I remember feeling the same way when I first subscribed to ipsy.
It takes subscription boxes like this some time to figure out your preferences. That’s why it’s important to review each item on the app so they know what kind of products/brands you like and don’t like.
I decided to give Birch Box another month to prove itself and it most certainly did! I was so excited about this box!!
1. Eyeko – Skinny Liquid Eyeliner
It’s not an October makeup subscription without some black liner! This one is a felt tip, which I actually don’t really like because they seem to try out quickly. I used this for most of my Halloween looks this year, but it’s unfortunately pretty dry already. I definitely prefer the ones that you dip the wand into! Not too bad otherwise and pretty easy to get a thin line – but I’m no eyeliner expert like some girls who do a perfect winged liner with one motion (I envy you guys).
2. Juliette Has a Gun – “Not a Perfume” Eau de Parfum
I’m pretty picky about perfumes and stick with one for years sometimes once I find one I like. Lately, I haven’t been using perfume due to the high price and not wanting to spend hours sniffing samples in stores. From Pac Sun perfume in middle school, to Pink Sugar and DKNY Apple perfume in high school, I’ve never really had a nice high-end perfume. This one has only one scent, Cetalox, and it’s incredible. It’s nice and subtle, not too sweet or flowery, but a spicy, woodsy, mustyish scent.

3. Malin+Goetz – vitamin e face moisturizer
Minimal packaging with nice colors, light formula, and vitamin e is a great combo for a moisturizer! I have been using this every night since I got it. Again, I love all skincare and I’m excited that Birch Box is finally sending me some good stuff. Definitely recommend this.
4. Mellow Cosmetics – Matte Liquid Lip Paint
I love applying liquid lipstick and the feeling for the first 10-15 minutes until it goes dry and cracks. This is actually the first one that has stayed on well without getting dry and turning my lips into the Sahara Desert. The color is exactly what I like in a lipstick, darker, muted, and neutral. The photo doesn’t show quite the right color, but you can see it on me here.
*cruelty-free and 100% vegan
5. R+Co – acid wash acv cleansing rinse
I was weary of this when I first saw it. I had never heard of a cleansing rinse like this and was not sure if I would like it. Of course, I try everything in my Birch Box or Ipsy unless I know for sure that I will not use it (mascara or a bad lip color), so I gave this a try. I squeezed some onto my scalp and massaged it in, waited about 3 minutes, then rinsed and shampooed as usual. It was incredible! My hair was silky and soft after my shower and I now use this once or twice a week!
